The Ocean within the Shell

Once upon a time there was a spirit that awoke to find itself in a human body on a planet called Earth. Amazed by the infinite beauty of this planet of abundance and by all the sensations it could feel through the wonderful senses of this human body,
it shone through the heart, open and wide, ready to absorb it all.

But very soon it became aware that not all sensations were desirable and pleasurable, that in fact some sensations were very unpleasant and caused pain that was unbearable to this body. So, the body took over, and it became cautious, to protect itself.
It became so cautious to protect itself and to avoid any harmful experiences, that eventually all the sensory gates to the heart were closed – precisely and efficiently.

Nothing could enter this impressive fortress anymore. No harm, no pain, not even a ray of light. No pleasure, no joy, absolutely nothing. Until the spirit that longed for lived experience was forgotten, leaving the human body an empty shell stranded on the shore. As time passed, more and more empty shells were found on that shore, randomly spread, half buried in the sand. And then, on that one sunny day, when the sky was blue and high, one of the shells, shimmering brightly in the sun, caught the eye of a little child passing by.
And the child stopped and looked and… picked it up.

She held the shell close to her ear, curious and excited, and she could hear a quiet rustle deep within,
whispering softly, “Remember…remember”.
